What vitamins do we need?

Vitamins are essential both as co factors in almost all biochemical reactions and as antioxidants to prevent damage to our cells and the DNA. This enables them to play a role in the health of all our tissues and organs. They are categorized into those that are fat soluble – A,D,E and K – and those that are water soluble – B and C.

Vitamin A is predominately responsible for good vision, healthy skin and hair and is necessary for fertility, fetal development and immunity.

Vitamin D is best know for it regulation of calcium and healthy teeth and bones, but it is increasingly recognized that it also plays an important role in our immune system and in cancer prevention.

Vitamin E is important in maintaining the structure of the cell membrane of every cell in our bodies. It is a powerful antioxidant preventing oxidization of fatty acids particularly within the cell membrane. It is also involved in the anti-inflammatory, immune systems and in DNA synthesis.

Vitamin K is best known for its role in blood clotting, and also in laying down strong mineralized bone.

The B Vitamins are a large group of vitamins whose main function is in the production of energy. But they are also essential in fetal development (especially in prevention of spina bifida), and the production of red and white blood and nerve cells. Their role in the production of serotonin is important in preventing depression.

Vitamin C is best known for its role in the production of healthy collagen, it is the most active anti-oxidant in the aqueous phase of living tissues, and also plays a role in our immune system.
